Man about the house

Did I tell you that, when Harvey was struggling to stand up on our wooden floors, someone gave us a nice rug for the hall? Well, they did, and it was in very good condition but we didn't want it any more so I put it on Freecycle. A man came to collect it yesterday.

He came in and explained that he was recently divorced and was collecting things for his house and doing it up. 'As I see you are,' he said.
I stared at him blankly for an instant. Then I realised.

Remember back in about April - just checked and it was February - when we started decorating the hall? It's painted above the wotsit but still waiting for paper below. You forget you're living under these conditions until it's pointed out to you by someone with fresh eyes.

I can't believe we've been like this since February. I need a man about the house.
xx

Glad to see you're a Freecycle fan, Liz. I've just been tied to the house for the past two days giving away the useful junk gleaned from my massive 'shed tidy-up' at the weekend.

Me, too!

I can identify. Our kitchen was in a state of half-painting for about two years! It took us three years altogether to finish painting it and get the floor redone.

A friend of mine just moved and she got rid of a lot of her stuff through Freecycle. I really like the idea.

Once upon a time I used to do a lot of the little fix-it jobs around here because I loved doing it and Dear Hubby is not the least bit 'domestic'...he'd rather be traipsing off in the woods somewhere. Since the birth of my grandson, those hours spent painting and sanding and fiddling around are long gone. And my house is falling down around my ears. I look at something that needs done, then just shut the door, haha! No time, no energy. I guess at 95 years of age it has a good excuse to fall apart, eh? But hopefully not completely, and hopefully not on my watch! You think your walls are bad? You ought to see my kitchen cabinets...YIKES!

Freecycle is a great idea. We got rid of a number of things from work recently, including an old slide projector and bags of Christmas decorations. And each time we had loads of enquiries. It's amazing what people want!

Don't talk to me about kitchens! Mine is in falling down mode too. This year we put off replacing it because of the wedding expense so maybe next year ...

Must be something in the air. I took a whole lot of stuff to St Vinnies after a clear out.

Sorry, I don't have a spare man about the house, otherwise you'd be welcome to borrow him...if he could finish renovating, that is.

When you're done with him, send him over here!

P.S. I've tried to comment recently but couldn't. Let's see if this works.

You live with things for years and when you want to sell your house, you suddenly fix and paint everything in sight. Crazy, aren't we?

just like the rest of us - behind on your decorating - it makes you more approachable and human i think :)

Pa-shaw! You just need a 'house critic' to stop by once a week. Kinda like a Mother-in-law!

Stu, emancipation is being free to do what you want, and I'm a woman who'd like to do what I want and have a man look after the house while I'm doing it! :)
