Oh, for goodness sake!

Surely I'm not the only person in the world not worried about swine flu? But on Radio 4 tonight, on PM (a news presentation and analysis programme) they played some calming music! And had this gentle voice telling us to picture a lovely garden scene with roses and peonies and birds etc etc.

They've cloned fluorescent dogs and the world's gone crazy.

I heard about the dogs last night, whatever next???? Well, we know the answer to that questions don't we? A plane flying into the states was held up when two of its passengers complained of sickness. They had just flown up from Mexico. The rest of the passengers weren't allowed off the plane until a doctor came on board and examined the possible carriers. Turned out it was not swine flu and everyone was then allowed to leave.

I know quite a few people who aren't remotely worried about swine flu. The media has gone into its usual scare-everyone-rigid mode, implying we'll all be dead in 24 hours. How many people have been infected so far - a few thousand? And the total global population is how many billion? I rest my case. I'm more likely to be hit by a meteor.

I am watching hourly TV updates on swine flu. Since I live in a somewhat remote area, I am not too worried, but will practice good hygiene, wash hands, cover nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing. But I don't plan hibernation! No swine domestic or wild, living near me, either.

Here's a tip I learnt myself...

Stop listening to Radio4 - generally I find my journies listening mostly to music now much more pleasant. I avoid a lot of TV news just catch the headlines and odd bulletins.

I feel much better about it, my rant and rage quota is a lot less as I don't get wound up by this stuff...

Oh yes - side funny - the teacher my wife works with is pregnant. Her mother helpfully went to her house and cleared out her fridge of sausages, ham etc. So funny actually that she really thought a human to human airborn contagen could be contained in this way... quick interview her on Radio4 :-)

I find it hard to understand I must say, denise.

I think they gave some number in the hundreds as those killed by bird flu, nick, and as you say, in a world population of billions, it doesn't seem that many.

And I'm sure you already practise good hygiene, nitwit.

That's a good story, furtheron. But, on a slightly different tack, pregnant women have to be much more careful these days than they did in my day. I'm sure I did all sorts of things that would be on the 'mustn't do' list now, and my children are fine.
