You love it or hate it

In Zac's last night, someone came up with the idea that Jesus was like Marmite: you either love him or hate him (at least according to the advertising slogans).

I was talking about this afterwards with Jenny.

We both know people who seem to be on a permanent high in their faith. They give the impression - although it isn't their intention - that to be anywhere else is not good enough.

I wouldn't say that I'm on a permanent low but certainly my faith is far less spectacular and exciting and wonderful and thrilling and ... you get the picture, than theirs. Mine is on a steady plane (plain?) with occasional highs and the odd troughs.

I like Marmite but not in great dollops. I prefer mine spread evenly over my toast. And that's okay. (In fact I've just noticed that it says spread thinly on the jar.)

And, sadly, I am rather suspicious of people who always spread it on thickly.

Share the Marmite, brothers and sisters!

Nice one.

That's very true. The Guy who can write you in the Book is always going to polarize opinion. That's why the satanists are forever trying to recrete resurrection without the code. Bohemian Grove's giant Moloch, for example.

Very neat. I like it a lot. And the Marmite.

I see they've changed the small print at the bottom(sic!) of the label too.

It used to say "Best before : see backside". Whose?

Indeed, some do infact as you comment, 'spread it on the the jar'!!.....so, 'does my faith look sticky in this?' they might boast. Oh yes, far too sticky! ;)

What great allegory! I'm more like you than the "lay it on thick" type. Just good old solid smooth spread.

I'm not sure I agree with the analogy.

I'm to an extent ambivalent about Jesus. Was he a great man, a terrific profit who has had one of the biggest impact a person has ever had on the world? Yes. Do I think a lot of his teachings extremely worthy as a code of conduct to aspire to live your life to? Yes But I think these of other profits and teachers as well.

Do I think he is the son-of-God made flesh through a virgin birth and part of the trinity of Christian doctrine… no I don’t.

So I don’t hate him, I don’t love him weither. I respect and admire his teachings as they are left to us 2000 years on and all the shenanigans of the early church adapting and rewriting the gospels.

Just thought I’d throw in my tuppence worth. It’s one of my bugbears on some religious teachings – “You are either with us or against us”. No I’m not with you but I can respect and live with you surely.

Yes, Furtheron, I do know what you mean. My husband has similar views. And I wouldn't actually say that I love Marmite! Just like it.

I certainly don't hate those who don't love Jesus, and I would be unhappy if that were the impression I gave.

I'm not sure what religious teachings or experience you have, but I wouldn't have thought that there were too many (except fundamentalists maybe) who look on non-Christians as against them - although it may appear to be my view from this post. It's certainly not Christ's view!

Thank you for raising this. The Marmite thing was just quite fun to do - and when did advertising genii allow a little thing like facts to get in the way?!!

There is a profound difference:

some people hear Christianity at a young age and - whatever bluffets and gusts come in between eventually sail back to it in the end

(just like a babyhood taste for Marmite) ...

others hear the wonders, see the light late into their lives and like the apostle Paul become later devotees

Such a thing NEVER EVER occurs with Marmite - to be sure!!

Don't know exactly what marmite is, but I get the inference and wholeheartedly love your comparison!

Interesting comparison! I'm with you on the spread it thinly thing. It gives bette balance to the overall experience I would think! (In both religion and Marmite).

I have to admit I have yet to try Marmite (it's Vegemite in Australia, yes?).
