We went on a summer holiday

So, the hols.

Not a lot to say really! Probably wouldn't go to Zakynthos again as it wasn't that inspiring or brilliant but it was fine for a week.

The weather was good except for the day we had booked for a turtle trek when it was so windy they wouldn't put any boats to sea! It wasn't unbearably hot and the people were all very friendly.

On the downside the beds were the worst we have ever experienced! By the third morning, after another sleepless night, I was almost in tears. Folding a blanket and putting it under the bottom sheet helped a little to take the edge off the springs but there was nothing we could do about the general hardness, so what was intended to be a relaxing holiday was slightly less than we would have hoped!

So, as I said, we didn't get to see any turtles - for which Zakynthos is famed - but we did go on a lovely boat trip around the top of the island to see the Blue Caves and the shipwreck.

Now the shipwreck beach is apparently one of the most photographed sights in the Greek islands. Okay, fine, I'm happy with that. Until the guide on the boat says, 'Now some people are a bit dubious about this shipwreck but it is genuine.'

Hmmm.

The beach it is on is the only sandy cove along the coast, in amongst rocky cliffs. Presumably it was wrecked on the rocks so how does it end up so conveniently placed in the centre of a sandy beach? (You can just see the shipwreck in the photo as we sailed into the cove.)

The boat trips to see the shipwreck are very popular. We were lucky: we got there first and the beach was deserted but as we were leaving two more, larger, cruise ships turned up and unloaded about 600 people.

I have to say that the beach would have been a whole lot prettier if there hadn't been a rusty old boat in the middle of it! It's not even as if it's an ancient old wooden boat: it only dates from 1980. Of course there are the usual stories about the locals getting to it first and not only rescuing the crew but removing all the contraband on board. Echoes of Whisky Galore?

I'll add some photos when Blogger plays along! Okay, it's let me add one but no more!

A nice get-away. I've been to Crete, many years ago. It was on business, but I did get to see some of the island. One of these days I'll take the wife for a visit.
